Forest Bathing For Organizational Culture: Mindfulness Exercises In Nature

Forest Bathing: Learning New Mindfulness Techniques

Forest bathing, far more than a nature walk that leads us down a worn path with our phones in hand at the ready to snap a photo.

In Japan, being still or moving slowly while immersed in nature was an ancient practice dating back to the 12th century. Reverence for the natural world was part of the culture and observing it was encouraged. Fast forward to the 1980’s and the formal term “shirin-yoku” was born. It translates to forest bathing, and the term and practice was Japan’s response to rapid urbanization and technological advancements. The 12th century wisdom holds up.

A key reason why this practice made it’s way west is due to scientific findings by Japanese researchers who observed a lowering of cortisol (stress hormone), reduced heart rate and increased parasympathetic nerve activity known to be the nervous systems relaxation response. All due to being quiet in the natural world…

12th century Japan was introduced to Zen Buddhism at this time, and emphasized a unity with nature along with zazen (sitting meditation) which was practiced in order to cultivate concentration and insight. Given the recent science, and Zen’s approach to meditation and reverence to nature, it seemed a perfect invitation to incorporate mindfulness techniques while in nature.

Organizational Development: Team Building Activities In Nature

In 2018, we began offering forest bathing and mindfulness walks as a team building activity, and they’ve been very well received. Being outdoors with team members provides a solid opportunity to foster employee engagement and encourage a positive organizational culture. We were told by many individuals that practicing mindfulness while in nature was easier and more enjoyable. By no means is this the only method for an individual or a workplace to find improvement, or learn mindfulness techniques, but it’s a simple, powerful, and a fun way to bring people together outside where identities and titles have slightly less meaning.

Mind EQ: Forest Bathing or Urban Walking Experiences

Mind EQ is probably the most excited when we have the opportunity to guide groups, individuals or teams into nature. Our forest bathing sessions, led by skilled mindfulness teachers, offer a transformative experience. If it happens that natural environments aren’t so close by to, we offer various other outdoor experiences that provide the same impact.

Visit our Organizations page to learn about more about forest bathing sessions, and other wellness programs.
